On The Road Again- Part 1

Newsletter – Thursday, July 16, 2009
As the song goes, “Get your kicks on Route 66” and that is exactly what Teri, I, and the kids are doing for the next 3 weeks. I have traveled cross-country at least four times on my motorcycle with my father, but this time I am in a 40 ft. motor home with my family. Think of it as a blend between the movie RV with Robin Williams (yes, I have my laptop and my iPhone) and the classic Vacation movie with Chevy Chase (no grandmother and no dog).  This trip is the culmination of months of planning and years of dreaming and I am very thankful that all of us are having an incredible time.

Our adventure started in Phoenix where we rented our “Eye Baller” (RV slang for a fully- loaded motorhome).  From there we headed to Williams, AZ.  This little community reminded me of Radiator Springs (from the movie Cars), a town that was ‘left behind’. Route 66 runs right through the center of town and believe me - they have made the most of its geographical location! Though they have a lot of visitors each year, they have reinvented themselves into a place that is friendly, amusing, and accommodating – certainly worth visiting.

In Williams, we took a train to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. There we hiked down the Bright Angel Trail. The trail was great and the views of the canyon were amazing. Just like in life though, what goes down must come up, and that process is slower than molasses when your eleven-year old wants to take a break every time he sees a rock to sit on and there are a lot of rocks in the Grand Canyon.

Day 3 we drove to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. On the way, we passed by a few Indian reservations and through a beautiful forest. As we came up to the North Rim, it is as though the canyon just jumps out and yells ‘Here I am!”. This view of the canyon is well worth the 300 miles we drove.  I had to ask myself, is it because it is less accessible that it seems more majestic?

So far the biggest impression made on me is how delightful it has been to spend this time with my family. My kids are having a great time and caring for each other. We are enjoying each other’s company and I have to admit that I did not know how good that feeling could be. For now I am taking one day at a time, and I am sure the three weeks will pass quickly. You will get at least one more letter from the road and I will try to include more pictures.

I hear this letter is going out via email because the printer (my sister Joady) is also on vacation. Obviously, that has not stopped you from reading the newsletter, but if you have a colleague who is wondering where the paper newsletter is this month, do them a favor and tell them to check their email or forward them a copy!

Finally, please keep sending your business to the Tuscano Agency. Even though I am away, it gives me a great deal of satisfaction to know that the people at Tuscano are more than capable of running the shop. Though my family would have extended our travels for three more weeks if they could, I need to come back just to feel like I am needed! Plus, even though my daughter thinks we are roughing it, it costs a lot of money to ‘rough it’ this way!

Happy Trails to you!
