News and Views: Reflecting Back 20 Years...

Newsletter – Wednesday, September 15, 2021
I’m guessing that everyone (old enough to remember) spent some time last week reflecting on where we were or what we were doing on September 11, 2001. The stories of the incredibly brave and heroic first-responders, passengers, and neighbors were everywhere. I especially appreciated the reminder of how the people of Gander, Newfoundland, opened their doors and hearts to the 7000 passengers waylaid from trans-Atlantic flights when U.S. airspace was shut down. If you have not already seen it, I highly recommend either the live Broadway musical or the filmed version of Come From Away, which is based on this story.

My son Sam was only 3 years old on 9/11 and so he remembers nothing of that day. He was asking about my “Where I was” story. Five of us from the agency were actually visiting a good friend, Ron McIlvaine, the owner of Western Surplus in Abilene, Texas. We were on our way to the annual NAPSLO conference in San Antonio that year. We were in the elevator heading to Ron’s office when the UPS delivery man asked if we’d heard about the plane that crashed into the World Trade Center. After the initial shock wore off, we spent the rest of the day trying to figure out how we could get home. When we could not rent a car to save our lives, Ron graciously lent us his new Yukon to drive 2200 miles across the country so we could be with our families. Ligonier, PA, where I live, is a little over 25 miles from Shanksville, PA where Flight 93 went down. That plane flew directly over both of my kids’ schools and was so low and loud that people in town observed it in its final descent.

Telling our stories is important. I’ve become ever more aware of this since my folks passed away. I suppose in some respect, this is the reason I write this newsletter, to tell the Tuscano story. Our stories are worth telling and are important.

How about a few success stories? We recently bound a 6-figure trucking account. It’s a PA risk with an unlimited radius, hauling lunch meat and cheese! We also hit on a nice Work Comp account that supplies armed and unarmed security to schools and professional offices. The Hospitality team recently wrote a $150K Motel account that included liquor liability, GL & Property, and XS – a really sweet bundle. Every day, we listen to the stories presented to us on the applications you submit. For every story, large or small, Tuscano is dedicated to providing excellent service, finding the right market and coverage, and giving your clients financial protection.

What’s the story with Halloween decorations going up in the middle of September? Well, if that’s the case, then I can talk about snowplow risks when it is 85 degrees outside! Markets for this line of business come and go, but we still have several carriers writing this line, all with varying appetites and minimums. One program, in particular, is exciting to me; they will consider new ventures and are interested in retail locations, private roads, schools, offices, and more. Minimums are all based on the carrier and the location. Most programs are fully earned due to the specific seasonal nature of the risk. We even have a market that will consider contractors who work on public roads and highways. Whatever type of snow removal risk you have on your desk, we’d love to hear your story and have you send it our way. Be sure to register HERE to join our CE class for Snowplows!

Tell your story; never forget.
