Help Your Clients Mitigate Data Breach Risk

Bulletin – Monday, September 18, 2017

As you've probably heard, Equifax, a leading credit reporting company, reported a data breach event that potentially impacts 143 million U.S. consumers. If one of your clients was affected by this breach, we suggest that they follow the steps below:

  • Read and keep the notice from Equifax.
  • If your clients were impacted by the breach, they should receive a notification from Equifax, read it carefully to see what information was exposed and how, and keep it. The notice provides a way to prove that the data was compromised through no fault of their own.
  • If your clients don't know yet if they were affected, they can go to www.equifaxsecurity2017.com and click Potential Impact to see if their personal information was potentially impacted by the breach.
  • Your clients will want to review the account that was impacted, to see what information it contained and what was compromised. They should look for unauthorized activities, such as a change of address or phone number.

If your clients want credit monitoring services, they can visit the Equifax website. Equifax is offering free access to their TrustedID Premier monitoring services for anyone who has used Equifax in the past, whether or not they were affected by the recent data breach. To sign up for free credit monitoring, visit www.equifaxsecurity2017.com and click Enroll.

CyberScout, a firm that specializes in identity theft prevention and resolution, may be a good resource for clients who have been impacted by a data breach.
