Personal Lines Underwriter Position Description

Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Underwrite/Rate/Submit/Quote new business.
  • Collaborate and review more complex risks with a more experienced underwriter/manager.
  • Develop effective investigative skills to review risks.
  • Submit bind requests to brokerage markets with subjectivities addressed. Coordinate additional binding steps with Associate Underwriters.
  • Direct the management of the renewal book of business; assist Assistant Underwriters with Renewals/Remarkets when necessary to ensure it is handled within established time standards.
  • Ensure compliance with underwriting guidelines and manuals, as well as federal and state insurance laws and regulations. 
  • Meet profitability, retention and written premium goals determined by management.
  • Coordinate agency visits (in-person or virtual) with a more experienced underwriter/manager/marketing to build book of business. 
  • Build a connection with our customers to facilitate more submissions.  Cultivate key broker relationships in the region to maintain a steady stream of business within our underwriting appetite.
  • Assist and support Associate Underwriter to provide guidance and answer questions. 
  • Provide direction with MGA bind requests as needed.
  • Provide direction on inspection reports as needed.
  • Provide assistance and/or direction with endorsements as needed.
  • Help and/or direction with policy correspondence as needed.
  • This position is considered an exempt position.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

  • Possess a knowledge of markets utilized by Tuscano (brokerage and MGA) and understand each company’s appetite.

  • Strong communication and organizational skills, networking and relationship ability, and ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Effectively apply guidelines from Company Underwriting Manuals.
  • Understand classification of risks and the factors used to determine rates.
  • Understand and explain basic insurance principles.
  • Ability to prioritize work in an effective manner.
  • Excellent customer service skills that align with our customer service expectations.
  • Exhibit proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office.

Required Licenses:

  • Hold a current Property & Casualty Producer License.
