News & Views: Happy Birthday USA!

Newsletter – Monday, July 2, 2018
You might already know this, but the 4th of July is my favorite holiday. Partly because I just love my country and the principles of liberty, freedom, and fierce independence. And partly because I throw the biggest bad-ass party in the county every 4th and I absolutely love it.

Teri and I have been hosting an annual gathering since we were too young and stupid to realize that the bottle rockets we fired off could have landed in our barn full of hay! Over the years (20+), a small gathering morphed into festivities that would have us working for weeks to get ready and for days afterward to clean up. Sometime around the beginning of 2017 though, I began to wonder if Rob Tuscano’s BBA Fourth of July party had run its course. With fair warning to all my friends and family, we declared that 2017 would be the last of these celebrations. Teri and I have done a 180° on our annual IndePalooza – no pig, no apple pie contest, and no fireworks in the pasture. Instead, we’ll be drinking beer in New England and watching fireworks that someone else sets off. Basically, I am ripping the Band-Aid off.

I still like to party though, so I’ll have to find another outlet for my gift of hospitality. In fact, as I sit here pecking away on my keyboard, I was informed that June 28 (today for me) is National Insurance Awareness Day. Maybe I’ll start celebrating the founding of ‘Protection and Indemnity’! After all, insurance is a fantastic profession with wonderful people and a real opportunity for entrepreneurs, small business owners, and innovators.

I love this business as you can probably tell. I love that what we do makes people’s lives better, provides peace of mind, and that we make things right when bad things happen. I love that we are always challenging ourselves to move beyond product and price and that we care more about people than our personal outcomes.

I love how our industry has resilience. We still insure ships and their cargo and the standard fire policy is like the Constitution of Insurance; but in the 21st century, there are new challenges and circumstances we need to adapt to – just like our Constitution! In this century, our customers will face a whole new set of threats to their financial security. Fire and theft are perils we’ve been schooled on and understand. Now we must rise to the challenge of insuring assets that are every bit as valuable – data and networks.

A recent article in the Wall Street Journal, Ransom Demands and Frozen Computers: Hackers Hit Towns Across the U.S., stated that cybercrime is on the rise and it is not just the mega-businesses like Target that are at risk. Cybercriminals have found it easier, and just as lucrative to exploit the gaps in small business and municipal networks.

Tuscano would like to be your go-to broker for Cyber. We offer Cyber Liability insurance which protects the data of others in the insured’s care, custody, and control and Data Security, which protects a policyholder’s own network and data. We have options for all size of accounts. For small business, we have an easy-to-use self-service rating tool - Cyber Liability and Data Security Plus - readily accessible through the Tuscano website. For larger accounts and government entities, we’d be happy to advise on coverage and placement options. If we can, we’ll ballpark the premium. And, we’ll direct you to the best market and easiest options for getting a bind-able quote.

In the spirit of all things summer and patriotic, Tuscano will be closing at noon on Tuesday, July 3rd and of course we’ll be closed all day on the 4th. Hope you have a wonderful holiday, and don’t forget to thank all the folks who serve this country and let freedom ring!

Happy 242nd birthday USA!
