News & Views: Snobbery

Newsletter – Friday, August 15, 2014

My sister is a self-declared coffee-snob. She admits it – she won’t drink anything but great coffee which she brews at home with her ‘over-the-top’ coffee machine. I have a lot of friends in this business who, even though I love them, are ridiculously snobbish about their wine. They make me feel quite amateurish, especially when I go to the liquor store with my wife and she says “Look how cool the label on this bottle is” and into the cart it goes. Thank goodness I am only a food snob.

Not that independent agents are ever snobbish – but it got me wondering, how do you pick your clients?

Do you identify with a particular client base? Do you go after clients that look like you? If you have a niche in a particular industry is it because you favor that industry? Perhaps you talked your wife into a beach house so you could write beach homes! I know producers who love to write truck business and they are extremely successful because they 'get' truckers. Some agents focus on the hospitality industry and make a point of eating out at all the local spots. I also understand it makes sense to get involved in your community – school boards, associations, local non-profits – because putting yourself out there allows you to make your services available. You don’t just sell insurance; the independent agent provides the means for businesses, organizations and individuals to protect their financial assets and to keep doing what they love.

So how can Tuscano community connect with all of you to provide the wide variety of insurance solutions we offer? We’ve made it our business to know the business we write. I like to think here at Tuscano we are insurance snobs - without the pretension!

A long time ago when we were starting out in the business we described ourselves as ‘generalists’. I’ve been told not to use that descriptor anymore because it sells us short – and I agree. We are specialists in many lines of business! Our Casualty team can write your miscellaneous professional liability account in all 21 states we serve. Not only that, but they are knowledgeable about the coverage options and can help you compare policy forms. Our commercial auto team is the best at what they do – I am snobbish about them! And when it comes to property and property packages, no one works harder for you than Marcia, Michelle, JoAnn, Teri and Mistey. The markets and programs written by our Small Business Unit are some of the best in the marketplace. Whether it is a BOP for a daycare or a vacant property, we can get you a quote fast!

Other brokers may claim to be a product specialist, but with Tuscano, we promise our specialty teams are knowledgeable, easy to work with, and care about the quality and experience you have. I am not sure Tuscano should make insurance snob our byline – but gosh – we do love to write insurance!
