News & Views : Waste Not

Newsletter – Wednesday, April 16, 2014

I have come to the conclusion that certain traits I have are due entirely to the fact that I am a child of parents who grew up during the Depression. I know this because I can’t stand to waste anything. If I pour too much shampoo into my hand, it all has to go into my hair. No tube of toothpaste is ever tossed until it has been squeezed to the last drop. Who else do you know that has a warehouse full of every old printer, desk, and file cabinet that are no longer in use, but may find a need for someday? So naturally, I credit my father for all of this.

Bill started the W.N. Tuscano Agency 44 years ago on the front porch of our family home. His legacy was establishing a wholesale brokerage agency built on relationship and service. His greatest achievement, in my opinion, was surrounding himself with talented people who would push back when they needed to. I’ll never forget one time Dad pitched an idea and Teri saying to him “That’s the stupidest thing I ever heard.” No one remembers that idea but they do remember that Teri wasn’t afraid to say what she thought. Bill was a down-to-earth guy who felt more comfortable driving a truck than sitting in a board meeting. But, he knew he wanted to be his own boss so he took the chance and look where we are now. Thanks, Dad.

As the leader of the Tuscano Agency, my mandate is to clearly communicate the mission of this company to both our employees and our customers. I need to know how well we measure up to our standards, where we fall short, and what obstacles need to be moved in order for people to do their best work. I am lucky because I work with a great team who love the business and absolutely love doing a great job for you. We are far from perfect, but we’ll never give up.

Even though we had snow yesterday, I am certain spring has arrived in Western PA. Around this time of year we see a lot of start-up businesses and new ventures. It could be a salon, small contractor, or a consultant. Each one of these customers has different coverage needs, just like established businesses. At Tuscano, we love new ventures and are successful in quoting them; it is the business we grew up writing. The new venture you send to Tuscano today could one day be 44 years old with 80+ employees!

One of the fastest growing classes of business here at Tuscano is Garage Liability, both dealer and non-dealer. While we know that a lot of standard carriers have garage programs, there is still a lot that falls outside of their underwriting appetite. At Tuscano, we have a dedicated team that not only specializes in garage, but it is what they dedicate 100% of their time to writing. They know the markets and how to put together the coverage for the unique aspects of your account. Do you have dealer plates? They know what the different plates are used for and how to cover them. Do you need Direct Primary coverage for Garage Keepers or Legal Liability? Even as many carriers are pulling back, we have markets that offer this coverage and the Garage Team can walk you through the underwriting process. I will add that not all of our markets are writing in all the states that we do business in, so please give Annie or Marilyn a call to discuss your garage risks and see if they can’t help you write this business.

Happy Spring!
