News & Views: Disaster Recovery Together

Newsletter – Friday, September 1, 2017

Many officials are calling Hurricane Harvey the worst disaster in Texas history. I've followed the news and seen the images, but I still have a difficult time imagining what 50 inches of rain is like. I'll tell you what though - it makes the Noah story a lot more believable!

Even though this storm will rank very high in the total cost of destruction, I am amazed at the sense of "we will get through this together" that is coming from the people of South Texas. I am so encouraged by the story about bakers trapped inside their bakery by the flood so what did they do? They baked their bread and when they were rescued they gave it away. Or the stories of folks in their monster trucks or boats rescuing people they didn't know just because they could. I've even heard about people with large homes opening their doors to others to wait out the storm. My heart goes out to the people of South Texas - your behavior in the midst of adversity is so refreshing and uplifting to the rest of the country. We are keeping you in our thoughts and prayers.

Are the people of south Texas so different from you and me? I don't think so. None of us knows how we'll react in the face of adversity, but I hope and pray if disaster ever comes to my door I will have the same spirit of community.

We are at our best when we are surrounded by good. It is true not only when facing disaster or adversity but in everyday life. The Tuscano Agency is a better E&S broker because we have so many quality staff and peers in the business! You as an insurance professional are made better because of the professionals who work next to you and 'down the street'. After that, we fall back to our service, markets, and brand we have in our wider community. What makes you good?

Disasters like Harvey make me think a lot about flood insurance coverage as I am sure you have as well. I could go off on a little rant about the NFIP but I'll leave that to the experts in the field. Instead, let's remind ourselves of the important role we, as insurance professionals, play in securing the financial well-being of our customers. And while no one wants to be Chicken Little, bad things happen all the time. While our insurance products, by design, restore and mitigate those losses. Let's do our jobs and make all our clients have the right coverage with the right provider and the right limits!

Is it possible this summer is coming to a close already? Summer Bummer! Tuscano is closing early today (Friday, September 1) and of course, we'll be closed Monday. I hope you all have a wonderful Labor Day weekend.

Thanks for your business!
