News & Views: For the Love of Hockey

Newsletter – Tuesday, May 2, 2017
For a very long time Pittsburgh, aka The Steel City, was a blue-collar town with an uncompromising passion for their sports teams. Today, Pittsburgh has so much to be proud of: the culture, the food, the contributions being made in technology and medicine, but first in our hearts will always be our Teams. Unless you follow hockey or are from a hockey town, there's a decent chance you don't even know that we're in the middle of the National Hockey League playoffs. Be that as it may, my life is pretty much consumed by the playoffs for as long as the Penguins are in them.

I've never played hockey except for a brief stint in a Y men's deck hockey league. It was twenty years ago so I was younger, fitter and stronger. I'm pretty sure every guy on the team had an injury by the time we finally gave it up... or was it our wives that made us? The talent of hockey players amazes me. For one, how does the goalie catch a bullet in their glove (you know there is a reason they say "shoot the puck"!)? Or what about tipping a puck going 90 miles an hour and redirecting it to where the goalie isn't?

For all the excitement and attention we give our sports heroes, I'm hoping you have a hero or two here at the Tuscano Agency. You can start a wave or a cheer or just call out Yahoo! for the people at Tuscano who help you get your job done.

This week the Pennsylvania Surplus Lines Association (PSLA) will be holding their annual meeting here in Pittsburgh. Being active in our local association is important to us. The PSLA acts as an intermediary between surplus lines licensees (that's us) and the Insurance Department, which means they know all about the kinds of business, carriers writing it, and premium volume flowing through our state. In fact, the PSLA publishes an annual report available for your reading pleasure.

In 2016, Pennsylvania reported $1.082 billion of surplus lines premium. While we expect to see nursing homes and pharmaceuticals manufacturing in the report, there is a large percentage of nightclubs and nearly $9 million of PA Homeowners business is written on surplus lines paper. The next time you worry about writing Habitational business in the surplus lines market - think again - a lot of people are accepting it! The surplus lines market is strong and thriving and there is a piece of it that you should be writing, with Tuscano of course!

In a little over a week, we'll be celebrating Mother's Day, and I just want to give a big shout out to all moms everywhere. Your sons and I say, "You are our Heroes!" I might admire (a little too much) the sports figures I follow, but I'd be nowhere without the incredibly strong women in my life who love me, encourage me, and have been excellent models for my life: my mother, my wife, my sisters, and my daughter. #ForceOfNature
