News & Views: Winding Down 2016

Newsletter – Friday, December 2, 2016

Don't look now but it's December and 2016 will quickly be last year's news. Why does December always feel like a long distance sprint? I suppose one reason is because the holidays are a great time for getting together with friends and associates. For me, it includes everything from the office Christmas Party to the 'extended' lunch appointments with colleagues. What a great time of year!

So imagine my surprise and delight when I recently attended a dinner hosted by one of our markets and Franco Harris showed up and joined us at our table! It just so happened that our host is a childhood friend of Franco. John and Franco go way back to their 'old neighborhood' of Mt. Holly, NJ.

For most people, Franco will always be remembered for his "Immaculate Reception" in the 1972 playoff game with the Raiders. But incredibly we spent most of the evening talking about his life before and after the NFL. Franco has two Super Bowl rings, an MVP trophy, and he is an NFL Hall of Fame inductee. He is one of the reasons Pittsburgh is known as a "drinking town with a sports problem." However, Franco never mentioned any of these accomplishments during dinner. Rather, he was thrilled to share some of his post-NFL endeavors. In 1990 he and his college roommate, Lydell Mitchell (who also played in the NFL), co-founded Super Bakery, a food service company with a mission to produce nutritional snacks for school-sponsored breakfasts and lunches. In 1996 the duo attempted to revive the Park Sausage brand after the company, the first African-American owned business to go public, struggled with bankruptcy. Since then Franco and his son have been active on a civic level in Pennsylvania and regional matters including Penn State alumni activities. There were plenty of high school and neighborhood stories shared throughout the evening making this dinner meeting a real treat. Afterward, it got me thinking - it's not who you know, it's who you know knows.

I love hearing stories about people who build a business and work to make their community better. Whether their mission is to make super-nutritious donuts or to remodel houses, Tuscano loves to be the oil in the engine!
