On my recent travels in Ireland, I had an interesting conversation with a woman who has experienced first-hand the open borders and opportunities of the European Union. She is Polish, born in Germany, and is working in Ireland. This is the reality of many modern Europeans. I felt a little bad though when she said she did not feel patriotic. I guess this is some form of nation-identity confusion; but then I started wondering, was this what it was like when the earliest Europeans landed on America's shores? 

We recently celebrated Labor Day here in Pittsburgh. The city hosts one of the largest Labor Day parades in the country and celebrates the contributions of the Labor and Trades vocations. The folks who participate represent many skills and professions which are honorable and necessary for our country to preserve the ideals of freedom, growth, and a better tomorrow. And, it takes all kinds of people with all kinds of talents and expertise to allow us to live up to the legacy of America.

Even though I'll be waving the black & gold flag for the Steelers this weekend, I love our American flag and all it symbolizes even more. I believe in the ideals of our country and consider myself a citizen-patriot. I also know you work hard, and that is what makes this country great. So let's work together and do great things!

How about them Cubs?! I keep telling anyone who will listen that I wish the Cubs would just win the World Series already. Then they can trade away their good players, and maybe the Pirates will finally get their shot at the championship!
