Last week I was driving home from work and not a mile from the office I heard a loud BANG!, then a flop-flop-flop. It’s been a long time since I’ve had a flat tire, but there is no mistaking it when it happens. I was on a busy highway, so I pulled onto the berm and sat there for a minute. My thoughts jumped around a bit – should I fix it myself (be a man!) or call AAA and actually use the service that I have been paying for the last 25 years?

AAA won the debate so I called the 800 number and was pleasantly surprised when they promised to be there in under an hour. Not long after I hung up, a complete stranger pulled over and asked if I needed help. Matt worked at the local Nissan auto service center. He too was on his way home after a long dirty day at work. I was happy to accept his offer of help – which when you think about it, a lot of people struggle to do. Matt and I hadn’t made much progress in getting the jack set up when Nancy from our office recognized my truck and turned around to check on me. A few minutes after that, an employee’s husband recognized me and stopped to lend a hand.

So how many middle-aged men does it take to jack up a car? Apparently more than three! Long story short, the AAA mechanic arrived and finished the job. Now I can't stop thinking about all these people who offered me help - some friends, some strangers. It reminded me that a person who lends a hand without hesitation is a person who can make a difference in someone else’s life. More importantly, it left me with the conviction that kindness is not a lost art.
