You are probably familiar with the song by Tom Cochrane, Life is a Highway. By the time I was 35 years old, I had visited every state in the US. Even now, I’ve never lost the sense of wonder and adventure as I travel. By the way - I’m really sorry that you now have that song stuck in your head!

There are two things I love about road trips in the United States; the opportunity to see the beauty and diversity of our country and the wonderful people I meet along the way. After reading about funny road signs, I’ve come to the conclusion that there are a lot of people out there just like me; for instance, there's a sign in California which advises, “Brakeless trucks, use freeway.” Or this one along Oregon’s winding coast, which warns, “Emergency stopping only. Whale watching is not an emergency. Keep driving.” The one I liked best is posted on a highway in Alaska, “Choose your rut carefully. You’ll be in it for the next two hundred miles.”

This got me thinking, if I am in a ‘rut’ when and how did I choose it and where is the nearest exit?

What rut are you in? Have you gotten ‘used’ to passing up business your contract carriers don’t want?
